On average, most adults have 32 teeth. That includes the molars, premolars, canines, wisdom teeth, and incisors. Every part of your tooth plays a role in keeping your mouth healthy. What are the parts of a tooth?

Crown: The crown is the top part of the tooth, above the gum line, that is visible to the eye. It has three layers within it: enamel, dentin and the pulp.

Enamel: The enamel is the outer layer of the tooth that helps to protect it from bad bacteria. It’s important to keep your enamel strong because it can help prevent cavities. Fun fact: it is the hardest substance in the human body!

Dentin: This is the layer underneath the enamel. Though not as strong, it takes up the majority of the tooth. When enamel is weakened, it can expose the dentin, therefore making you more susceptible to cavities. 

Pulp: The pulp is the very center of the tooth. This is where the nerves, blood vessels, and tissue can be found. 

Root: The root, which is covered in a substance called cenetum, anchors the tooth into the bone. The center most part of it is called the root canal.
