What is a root canal?

The pulp is the innermost layer of your tooth that contains blood vessels, nerves and connective tissues. Infection in the pulp often happens when bacteria enter your tooth through a crack or cavity. After the pulp has been removed, the dentist will clean the inside of the tooth and fill the space. Depending on the tooth in question, you may receive a crown to restore the tooth to its full function. Root canals are typically completed in one or two appointments. Recovery time is generally about a week.

A root canal can cost more than a simple extraction. However, because a root canal preserves your natural tooth, there is no need for a dental implant afterwards. Because of this, a root canal may be a less expensive option overall.
