Laser dentistry is a minimally invasive and painless alternative to dental surgery. Laser therapy is often used to remove inflamed gum tissues, decontaminate periodontal pockets and treat gum disease. Laser therapy is also used to relieve the pain associated with cold sores and canker sores, and is a quicker alternative to teeth whitening.
How does laser therapy work?
Dental lasers are devices that emit narrow, focused beams of light for use in dental surgery. Dental lasers come in a variety of wavelengths designed for common procedures – most often the removal of gum tissue, cavity treatment or teeth whitening. Laser therapy is sometimes recommended for patients who are anxious about traditional surgery methods.
What are the benefits of laser dentistry?
When compared to traditional surgery, laser dentistry has a lot of benefits! The most important is that it’s less painful. With laser therapy, patients may not require anesthesia and are less likely to require sutures (stitches) – so you’ll recover from your treatment faster. In addition, the laser sterilizes the tissue it touches, so infection is less likely to occur than with traditional surgery.
How does laser dentistry feel?
Laser therapy is mostly painless. If anything, it feels more like warmth underneath the gums or a small, temporary tingling sensation. Patients need less anesthesia than traditional surgery and should experience less bleeding. Also, laser therapy doesn’t take as long as some traditional surgical procedures — we can help you in just a single appointment!
Is laser dentistry safe for kids?
Yes, laser dentistry is safe for children, too! If your child has braces or is nervous about needles and other dental instruments, laser therapy may be a safe and relaxing alternative. Talk to your dentist and find out if laser dentistry is right for your child.
