A root canal is a treatment to repair and save a badly damaged or infected tooth. The procedure involves removing the damaged area of the tooth (the pulp), cleaning and disinfecting it, then filling and sealing it. Common causes affecting the pulp are a cracked tooth, deep cavity, trauma or repeated treatment to the tooth. The term “root canal” comes from cleaning of the canals inside the tooth’s root.
How long does it take for the pain to go away after a root canal?
A successful root canal can cause mild pain for a few days. This is temporary, and should go away on its own as long as you practice good oral hygiene. Follow up with your dentist if the pain lasts longer than a few days.
Is it normal to have a little swelling after a root canal?
Yes. It takes some time for the swelling to decrease and for the tissue to heal after a root canal is completed. Pain and inflammation usually resolves in a few days.
