What is a crown?
If you have a tooth that needs a little extra support, your dentist may recommend a crown as part of your treatment plan. A crown is a tooth-shaped “cap” made of porcelain or ceramic that covers the tooth. Generally, a crown is placed on top of a tooth that is damaged or in need of repair.
Why would I need a crown?
Here are a few circumstances when you might need a crown:
To hold a large filling if there isn’t enough of the tooth left to hold the filling on its own.
To help attach a bridge where there are missing teeth.
To protect a tooth that is susceptible to breaking or restore one that is already broken.
